To Amoy by ship

I’m going to board a ship bound for Amoy this evening in Taichung, if the high-speed rail gets me there in time. Why a ship? Everyone is asking. I like ships. I like the feeling of getting on them and going places.

I’ve only been writing here when I go on such trips, it seems. When I started, nearly a decade ago, I’d write on a nearly daily basis. Everything was free and easy then. Lots has changed. Blogs seem like leather-bound TIME edition encyclopedia tombs these days compared with Facebook and Twitter and the like. But nothing can be said at length in such media, and though it seems these days that more and more people feel like things said at length aren’t worth bothering with, my favorite daily read is still a blog. James Lileks’ Bleat, if you must know.

Still, as my 10th blogiversary (urg. That word.) approachith, I feel the need to redesign and simplify this site. Get rid of all the extraneous blogs and other bits. The problem, of course, is that I know less than nothing about web design, and my MYSQL has fallen and can’t get up without updating my WordPress to something from this millennium, which it can’t do because my MYSQL is too old. Or something like that.

In other news, my would-be agent for the English-language version of my book is on the cusp of becoming my actual agent, as she sent me a contract to sign. So…progress. We’ve agreed on a new title for the book, which I will reveal at some point I suppose. When you hear it you’ll think “Of course! Perfect!” (I hope).

I went to a party last night at La Boca. Lots of movie people crammed in a cozy basement space drinking wine while I downed mojitos and tried to look Approachable and Interesting, no mean feat for me. I did cut a trailer for ye olde moviee recently, which has been well-received. The movie site’s been hacked for ages, and due to the above-mentioned issues I haven’t really been able to fix it. The trailer was well-received, though it’s been causing everyone to start asking again when the movie will be done. And my answer is the same as it was in 2008, ANYWAY LET’S NOT TALK ABOUT THAT as it’s sunny for the first time in weeks and I’m about to get on a boat to ol’ China once again. See you on the other side.

  1. I look forward to seeing your photos of Xiamen. I lived there in 2002-2003 but haven’t been back since.
