Why is the letter Z so popular these days? Is S old-fashioned? Why iz it boyz and grrlz theze dayz are all using z to denote pluralz instead of s? Is it S for Stigma now? My theory is that Z is the new Y. You remember when Y was big and came close to supplanting I and many other major vowels? Wyld Tyger Womyn of Chyna and all that? It was like a coup led by the less popular letters, but then it just got cheezy. It shouldn’t be too long before people start saying that Z is “so millennium” in a derogatory fashion. What’s next? I don’t know, but I think X is looking kind of downtrodden lately, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it launches an attack on several of the more arrogant consonants.
