I was told this morning about a new show in the states called A Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. All I have to say about this is Holy Shit what a concept. In the show a bunch of guys with “good” taste give a guy they percieve as a “slob” a makeover. They do his hair, redecorate his apartment, and tell him how to act. What this has to do with sexuality I don’t know, but it does have everything to do with stereotypes. Then again, I’m clueless about the situation in the states these days, what’s ok and what’s not, etc. For all I know they have a show where a bunch of black guys teach a white guy how to play basketball, appreciate fried chicken and mug people.
Not that I would have a problem with people wanting to buy me stuff for my apartment, but if anyone came up to me and said “We’d like to give you a new image, and our qualifications are basically that we’re gay”, I’d tell them to fuck off.
The typhoon having passed well to the south of us, our weather is back to the typical mid-summer sauna-like heat punctuated with occasional sauna-like showers. Tall Paul, Darrell and I are going to be shooting tomorrow morning at the Chingmei Riverside park. There are children involved, but it should be fun anyway. Then we’re having the Lady X Wrap party that evening at Dean’s. We’ll have drinks, snacks, scintillating conversation, and Lady X VCDs to hand out.
I was walking around down by the Chichang MRT station the other day, and I was surprised to find some nice little neighborhoods in the vicinity. The Taipei basin narrows into a strip of land between the river and the mountains down there, so it’s actually not too bad. I had always judged it by just travelling down Roosevelt Road, which is kind of horrible looking, but, as is usually the case in Taiwan, things get better an alley or two in. I walked down to the Hsindian City Hall station to find Zhonghua Road, which is lined with tall thick trees and old-fashioned lamposts. The stores and buildings are nothing special, but the tunnel atmosphere created by the trees is quite nice. I’ve always been biased against southern Taipei for some reason; I always felt it was rather gritty and depressing, while the areas to the north seemed cleaner and more livable, but perhaps I’ve been fooling myself all these years.
To date, Blogger is still buggy, none of my complaints have been viewed much less addressed, but the Chinese characters are still not being accepted. The folks at Blogger have well and truly fucked this whole thing up royally. Any advice on switching to Movable Type?
